From their heyday in the 50s to their closing in the 70s, drive-ins were a great way to watch a movie, or hang out with friends.

I remember my first drive in from when I was in 5th grade. There was one right across from my school, at the corner where I took the bus. Sometimes, after cub scout meetings, we would try to watch the movie from the sidewalk. It was a real mom and pop affair. I don’t think you could fit 30 cars inside. Throughout the 60s and 70s, my father would take the whole family to the drive in to watch his favorite movie stars: Rachel Welch and Clint Eastwood. LAter on, in my teenage years, it would be a different story. Picture this: 6 or 7 of my friends would pile in the car of Fernan ‘Motor’, him being a lot older than the rest of us, and head out to the drive in. Most of the times, we would all get out of the car before we reached the entrance, and let Fernan drive inside by himself. We would then jump a fence along the main highway and meet inside by the screen. I remember we had a special call, a whistle, phwseee phwseee phwseeeewww that we would follow it until we found each other (we used that call in many other situations). That was a lot of fun, if not illegal… At the end of the drive in days, I remember a couple of times going with a group of friends and making out with some girls, and that was as much fun…

I was a bit late to the drive-in party, considering I grew up in the ’70s in a small town. The closest one to my family was over two hours away. However, I do remember a few occasions over my early life when my dad would scrape together a few extra bucks and take us. I have just recently (two years ago) moved to Tucson, Arizona and there is a fully active and apparently thriving drive-in where you pay $8 at the gate, find your spot, and tune your stereo to a specific station given to you as you pull in. The money you pay at the gate gets you two movies. These movies are just after the inital first run, but long before they hit the cheapie theaters. It’s an awesome piece of nostalgia, mixed (if you have a good system in your car) with modern technology.
